ADHD and Sleep Problems
Harvard Health Publications has released a report highlighting the often-unrecognized relationship between ADHD and sleep problems. Contrary to common belief, ADHD can significantly impact sleep for many individuals. The restlessness experienced both physically and mentally due to ADHD can disrupt natural sleep patterns, leading to difficulties in falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up, or a combination of these issues.
Interestingly, sleep problems associated with ADHD tend to emerge later in life, particularly during the teenage years. Recent research indicates that approximately 10% to 15% of teenagers with ADHD struggle with falling asleep, which is about twice the average rate compared to their peers without ADHD.
To improve sleep quality, practicing good "sleep hygiene" becomes crucial. This involves creating a sleep-friendly environment in the bedroom that is conducive to rest, maintaining consistent sleep and wake times, avoiding daytime napping and late-night screen time, and limiting caffeine intake. It is also important for individuals taking ADHD medication to discuss with their healthcare provider the possibility of adjusting medication timing to minimize its impact on sleep and using any other alternative methods for sleep improvement.
